Izmir

John and I spent a day in the city of Izmir, the third-largest in Turkey. We felt like the only western tourists in the whole city.

Small mosque by the water

Ottoman clock tower, apparently placed here by the ottoman sultans to remind the residents of Izmir that they were part of the empire, not westerners.

We flew from Izmir to Athens via Istanbul. At the airport in Istanbul, it was possible for travellers to vote in the national election!
